It’s always adorable to see an unlikely friendship form between two animals, and while we’ve seen quite a few of these relationships, I don’t think we’ve ever seen one this unique!

Meet Jack and Diane, a donkey and an emu who seem to have fallen in love with each other! The two were abandoned on a farm in South Carolina before they were rescued last month by Carolina Waterfowl Rescue. The bond the two shared with each other was immediately clear to rescue workers, but they feared it would be difficult to find a forever home that would take both of them, so staffers prepared for the heartbreaking task of separating them.

Rescue workers first saw their bond when they put Jack and Diane in separate enclosures, and they both started to cry. They would not calm down until they were placed in an enclosure together.

“Then we put them in the same enclosure together, and they calmed down,” one rescue worker said.

Just in the nick of time, an unlikely hero stepped in to save Jack and Diane. When “Walking Dead” star Jeffrey Dean Morgan heard their story, he knew he had to do something to help them.

Jeffrey and his wife, “One Tree Hill” star Hilarie Burton, could not stand to see these two animals be separated. That’s why they decided to adopt both of them and bring them to their farm in New York’s Hudson Valley!

Jeffrey already owns tons of donkeys, cows, and alpacas on his farm, so rescue workers were comfortable handing over Jack and Diane to him.

“He just seemed like the perfect fit,” one staffer said. “He loves his animals, and he cares for them greatly.”

We applaud Jeffrey and Hilarie for making it so that Jack and Diane can continue to enjoy their lives together!
