Elephants travel in herds, but sometimes they get separated. That is the case with one little elephant that was traveling through southern India. He was with a herd of 50 elephants, but he and 10 other elephants got separated while walking.

The baby elephant slipped into the bottom of a farmer’s well, and although he tried to get out, and the other members of his herd tried to help, the well was just too deep. Eventually the other elephants left, but luckily the villagers could hear the baby in the well and alerted local officials. It didn’t take long for the forest officials to jump to the rescue of the baby.

They brought an excavator to the scene and for six hours they dug into the well to create a ramp for the baby elephant. Having been away from his herd for so long, the baby was visibly confused. Still, it didn’t take him long to discover the ramp as soon as it was fixed for him to get out of the well. With a bit of effort on his part, the exhausted baby elephant was able to climb his way out of the well to freedom.

When the baby reached the top of the well, the crowd that had gathered to watch the scene cheered and the baby took off running for the rest of his herd.
