Our parents spend their time taking care of us and making sure our needs are met. As they age, eventually it becomes our job to take care of them and help provide their needs. It is part of the cycle of life. But sometimes it can be extremely hard to take care of our aging loved ones, especially if they suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or other similar disorders. That’s why so many elderly people end up in the care of a hospital or other facility.

One of the latest stories about a father abandoned by his children started in Florida, and it will break your heart. How people can be so cruel, especially to their parents, is unbelievable.

Jerry Ellingsen, age 80, was found by United Airline officials wandering around the Denver airport. He suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and didn’t know where he was or why he was even there. He was so confused he couldn’t even answer their questions.

Not knowing what else to do, they took him to a local hospital for care. The police later discovered that Ellingsen had lived with his brother and nephew in Florida, but they decided they could no longer care for him, so they sent him to his daughter’s home.

The daughter refused to take care of her father and made the decision to send him to stay with his estranged wife. She sent him on a one way flight to Denver and told him she was “done with him.”

The police were able to make contact with Jerry’s estranged wife and daughter, but neither of them wanted to have anything to do with Jerry. He was admitted to Porter Adventist Hospital. Doug Muir, who oversees patients at the hospital Jerry was admitted to says we need to demand better care for these people as a society and a community. “At the end of the day, this is our loved ones that we are talking about.”
