A couple from Northern California was out walking their dog on their property one day when they came upon something that would change their lives forever.

During their walk, the woman noticed a rusty old tin can sticking up out of the ground. She almost didn’t even look at it, but boy is she glad that she did now!

The tin can ended up being full of rare solid gold coins that dated back to California’s Gold Rush days in the 1800s. The couple soon realized that there were seven other cans like this one filled with coins nearby.

In total, there were 1,400 solid gold coins that dated back to California’s Gold Rush days in the 1800s, and they came out to an estimated value of a whopping $10 million.

“. . . you don’t get an opportunity to handle this kind of material, a treasure like this, ever. It’s like they found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow,” said Don Kagin, a veteran numismatist who represented the couple.

The couple, who has asked to remain anonymous, has since put the coins on the market. Some of the coins are estimated to be worth $1 million on their own! The couple has revealed that they used some of the money from the sale to pay off some bills, but they then donated the rest of the coins to charities that serve to help their community.

Don said that the woman’s only advice for wannabe fortune hunters is, “Don’t be above bending over to check on a rusty can.”
