In an effort to clean up the city, Rome, Italy has banned pub crawls, dressing up as a centurion, and drinking in the streets.

Rome’s council ruled that fines will be issued to those who are caught dog fouling, soliciting prostitution and even “eating in a slovenly fashion.”

“After 72 years of waiting, Rome has new urban police regulations,” said Virginia Raggi, Rome’s mayor. “Today is a historic day.”

Rome’s police force will have more powers and additional officers will be hired to enforce the local government rules by handing out fines and banning people from certain areas.

A strict 2am curfew has been issued after which no alcoholic beverages can be served in Rome. A fine of €150 will be given to those drinking alcohol and €280 for businesses selling it.

On top of that, the council also banned costume gladiators after accusations of “over-charging, harassing and pick-pocketing unsuspecting tourists.” Anyone caught dressing up as a gladiator and posing with tourists face fines of up to 400 euros.

Rome’s council also just made permanent the fines imposed earlier this year on also people eating near or climbing on fountains. The Trevi fountain has particularly been noted as a spot in which tourists have behaved badly, as has the Spanish steps.

Italians have long complained about the “disgusting” conditions in the capital, and many are quite happy about a crackdown on mass tourism.

It remains to be seen whether these bans will help fix the problems being posed by tourists. Do you support these bans? Let us know in the comments section.
