California has been in crisis mode for the past week as wildfires have wreaked havoc on the state, killing 42 people and destroying thousands of homes.
One of the people who was impacted by this carnage is 93 year-old World War II veteran Lee Brundige, who is still not sure if his home in Paradise, California is still standing. Lee lives alone, and when he first heard about the wildfires, he jumped in his car and headed to a parking lot in the next town over. When he got there, he met other evacuees like Tracy Grant, who offered him a hamburger. Lee replied by telling her to save the food for someone else who needed it more.
Eventually, police told people to leave the parking lot since the wildfires were getting closer. Tracy asked Lee if he had anywhere to go, and he told her that he was effectively homeless and would just sleep in his car. Tracy, however, wasn’t having any of it.

Tracy invited Lee to stay with her and her boyfriend, Josh Fox, at their nearby home.
“He called me ‘the burger girl’. It took us about 24 hours to convince him to follow me home,” she said.
Lee declined her offer because he did not want to be a burden, but Tracy refused to give up.
“I didn’t like leaving him there, but he’s very independent,” she said. “So I made sure he had blankets and a pillow, I stayed with him until about midnight.”

Tracy finally convinced the veteran to come home with her!
“We found he has many friends and is loved by his community,” she said. “He can stay with us as long as he would like.”
While disasters like these wildfires are horrifying, it’s always nice to see people come together when they are faced with them. Find out more about this in the video below!
