Sunday was Remembrance Day in the United Kingdom, which is a day in which the people of Britain remember those who fought and died in World War I. Many were surprised when they noticed that Meghan Markle was not standing on the same balcony as the Queen, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, or Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall during the Remembrance Day commemorations. Now, the reason for this has been revealed.

It has been reported that at traditional events like this one, the royal family arranges themselves in the official “pecking order” of secession. That’s why Meghan watched the proceedings on another balcony with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s wife Elke Buedenbender. This is also why Meghan stood behind Prince William and Kate at the Trooping the Colour back in June.

“She was not as prominent perhaps as some people might have expected, but there’s a pecking order,” explained royal expert Joe Little. “There was no slight intended, but William being the older, more senior brother would go out first with his wife. Meghan was still in a good position. She was central rather than the alternative of being in the front row and along the balcony to the left or right.”

Another source said that Meghan’s position on the balcony “would have come from her”.

“There’s no one laying this out, telling her where to stand,” the source said. “And there were a lot of kids, who everyone would want at the front.”
