Over the course of the twentieth century, great strides were made in terms of what was and was not acceptable for women to do and wear. They began the 1900s incredibly repressed, and by the end of the century, they had made tons of progress in obtaining rights for themselves.
We’ve compiled ten photos of women that were considered to be “scandalous” when they were taken. In looking through these, it becomes very obvious just how much progress women have made.

Professional swimmer Annette Kellermann posed for this photo in her bathing suit in 1907. Believe it or not, the image was considered so risqué at the time that she was arrested and charged with indecent behavior.

Just a few years later, this woman was arrested for wearing a swimsuit and showing her legs in public.

In 1937, these two women caused quite a scandal by showing off their legs in public in Toronto, Canada.

Actress Lila Lee modeled this swimsuit in the 1920s. Entire leagues of people protested against this swimsuit, calling it “indecent.”

Meet Maude Wagner, the first female tattoo artist! She decided to cover her body in tattoos before posing for this photo in 1907.

In 1947, these bikini-clad protesters boycotted a California shop that wanted to re-introduce longer skirts and padded hips.

These two girls were considered to be very scandalous by walking down a street in Capetown, South Africa wearing miniskirts in 1965.

Also in 1965, Jean Shrimpton caused quite a stir by wearing a minidress to the races in Melbourne, Australia. I’m not sure if this would even be considered a short skirt today!

Meet Mary Quant, the woman who invented the miniskirt!

In 1966, just over 50 years ago, women were still not allowed to enter restaurants in pantsuits. Yves Saint Laurent was so appalled over this that he created a pantsuit just for women, and they caught on immediately!
