Hollywood is in mourning this week after legendary stuntwoman Kitty O’Neil, who happened to be deaf, passed away. She was 72 years-old.

Kitty was best known for being Lynda Carter’s stuntwoman on the 1970s television series “Wonder Woman,” and for being the stunt double for Lindsay Wagner on “The Bionic Woman.” On top of performing stunts for movies and television, Kitty set the land-speed record for women in 1976.

Kitty became interested in speed racing while working as a stuntwoman, and she made history when she travelled at an average of 512mph through the Alvord Desert in Oregon in a rocket-powered car called The Motivator. She set 22 records during her career, some on land and some on water. On a jet-powered boat called Captain Crazy, she set world speed records at 275mph, and she also broke the world water ski record by traveling at 105mph.

Kitty’s achievements are made all the more amazing by the fact that she lost her hearing when she was just four months old due to a fever from measles. She never let being deaf hold her back from accomplishing her dreams in the stunt and racing worlds!

One of her most harrowing stunts came in 1979, when she fell 127 feet headfirst from the top of the Valley Hilton hotel in Los Angeles onto a giant inflatable airbag as she performed a “Wonder Woman” stunt.

“If I hadn’t hit the center of the bag, I probably would have been killed,” she said.

Kitty eventually retired to South Dakota, where she passed away due to complications from pneumonia. A few years before her death, Kitty gave an interview in which she opened up about why she loved performing stunts.

“I’m not afraid of anything, just do it,” she said. “It feels good when you finish, you made it.”

Rest in peace, Kitty O’Neil!
