November 11th is Veteran’s Day in the United States. After Halloween is over, we are supposed to take time out before the other holidays begin to honor the military veterans who gave their lives so we could celebrate these holidays.
However, some people, and especially retail stores, seemed to have forgotten that there is a holiday between Halloween and Thanksgiving. As soon as Halloween is over, they jump right into Christmas.
While there isn’t anything wrong with hanging up a wreath, putting up your Christmas tree, or decorating your house, some people view it as a sign of disrespect if it is done too soon.
That is the case with one store in Canada who is refusing to add holiday items to their shelves or put up holiday decor until November 11th is over.
Bigway Foods in St-Pierre-Jolys, Manitoba has a sign hanging on empty shelves that says, “Lest We Forget.” It is a subtle reminder that men and women gave their lives for us and we should never forget that.
The store manager says that local people have been very supportive of the decision and some have even brought in photos and stories of their loved ones who fought to display on the shelves and share with others.
But not everyone is supportive of the display. Karen Sorochan, the manager of Ten Thousand Villages in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan said she doesn’t think it is disrespectful of stores to put up festive items before November 11th has passed.
She says customers start buying more for the holidays right after Halloween and it is hard to put up the new items with more traffic in the store. She says it is also a necessity to keep up with Walmart and other big retailers who put out Christmas items right after Halloween.

Ultimately, when you put up your Christmas items is a personal decision, but it is one that needs to be made knowing that men and women gave their lives so that we could have these holidays to celebrate and we should never forget that. Share this story if you agree.
