Synchronized skating is actually a fairly young sport, only catching on in the United States in the 1970s. Dr. Richard Porter is known as the “father of synchronized skating,” as he formed the first synchronized skating team. Called “The Hockettes,” this team skated in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and they would perform during games of the University of Michigan Men’s Hockey Team.
The sport quickly became so popular in the U.S. that it spread to Canada. The first international competition between American and Canadian teams took place in March of 1976, and soon, the sport had spread all over the world! These days, thousands of men and women complete in synchronized skating every year.

The Russian team in this video took the ice as “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston played over the loudspeaker. The combination of Whitney’s powerful voice and the skaters’ intricate moves was pure magic, and the audience was left completely speechless by the end of it!

The video has gone mega-viral, being viewed over twelve million times and touching the hearts of people all over the world!
