A Kansas doctor just went above and beyond to fulfill the dying wish of an 80 year-old dying woman named Mary, who just wanted to see her beloved dog Herman one last time.

After Mary was rushed to the hospital, nobody volunteered to take care of her 11-year-old rat terrier, so he was sent to an animal shelter. Mary told Dr. Ryan Sears of Kansas City Medical Partners that she wanted to see her dog one more time, but she had no idea where he was taken.

Undeterred, Sears called all of the shelters that he could find until he finally found the one that had Herman. State Line Animal Hospital & Holistic Health took to social media to say what happened.

“A couple weeks later, his owner’s doctor contacted us asking if he could come get Herman to see his owner before she passed away. The woman had no family or friends to take care of her or Herman. That wonderful doctor went above and beyond and came to get Herman. He got to see is owner one last time before she passed away the next day.”

Herman was rushed to Mary’s hospital bed, and they were both clearly happy to see each other.

“The instant that she saw him, she was wanting to pet on him, and you could see the change in her face that she was so happy to see her dog,” Sears said.

Nurses wrapped the dog in a blanket so that he could cuddle with Mary.

“He wanted to be right up next to her,” Sears said. “We had to wrap him up in a blanket because he was just so much energy, and we had so many things going on at time.”

Once she saw Herman again, Mary was at peace, and she passed away the very next day. Herman then returned to State Line, where staffers helped him through the mourning process. Since then, you’ll be happy to know that Herman has been adopted into a new forever home!

“Herman has been adopted and is loving his new home. Here are some pictures the new owner shared with us!” the shelter revealed on Facebook.

St. Joseph Medical Center also praised Sears on Facebook when they learned what he had done.

God bless this devoted doctor, and we’re so glad that Herman found a new home! Mary would be so happy to know that her dog will be cared for and loved for the rest of his days!
