James MacDonald is one of the most famous megachurch pastors in the world. He decided to pose as a homeless man outside of a few campuses of Harvest Bible Chapel to see how his congregants treat the less fortunate. He was left stunned by the way those he preaches to treated him in his homeless disguise.
MacDonald, who started the megachurch in Chicago, sat outside of his churches wearing a gray, mangy beard and shabby clothing.
“The closer a person is to us and the less common the struggle, the easier it is to love,” MacDonald said in a video posted to Facebook. “[H]ow common is homelessness? How frequently is the homeless person someone dear to us personally? Never.”
Minutes later, MacDonald walked into the church and approached the pulpit. Once he got there, he removed his disguise and revealed his true identity.
“Do you know that your father in Heaven is giving the same graces to the person that is hardest for you to love? He is giving it. He doesn’t play favorites. He is giving the grace to everyone,” he told his congregation. “If we are going to love like our father in Heaven loves, we don’t get to play favorites. By favorites, I mean, so often we love the people when there is some benefit in it for us.”
MacDonald wanted to show his congregants that it is “hardest to love when the problem is most common and the people are least known.”
He explained that the way his congregants treated him left him “crying inside that beard.” He then showed footage of his congregants praying with him and giving him cash and food while he was disguised as a homeless man.
“I dressed up as a homeless man and sat outside our church,” the pastor said. “What I witnessed blew me away.”
