Simon Cowell is known for being one of the toughest talent show judges on television on shows like “America’s Got Talent” and “The X Factor.” However, what many do not know about him is that behind this tough exterior, he has a heart of gold!

Simon showed his softer side earlier this year, when he donated £50,000 ($65,6700 USD) for a four-year-old’s cancer treatment. Back in May of this year, 4 year-old Zachariah (Zac) Oliver was diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive form of childhood Leukemia called Near Haploid. His JustGiving fundraising page explains that while he has undergone four months of chemotherapy, the treatment has not gotten rid of the cancer.

Mark Garbett, Zac’s dad, wrote on the page that “the alternatives available in the UK have a very limited chance of success. That’s why he is looking to raise the needed £500,000 ($650,670 USD) needed to send Zac to the Kymriah at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia so he can participate in a clinical trial to receive Car T-cell therapy.

“We will not watch him die. We will not wait for his little body to become weak from all the toxic chemotherapy before giving our little boy what could be a lifesaving treatment,” Mark wrote.

While the experiment is experimental, Mark said that it is the best chance that Zac has to survive.

Around 6,000 children in the United States and Europe are diagnosed with this disease every year, and chemotherapy, radiation and stem-cell transplants cure about 85% of the patients. Sadly, children who relapse have a much lower survival rate.

“When it comes back, it usually ends in a rapid death,” explained Zac’s mother Hannah Oliver-Willets.

Simon is a father of a 4 year-old boy himself, so he was immediately touched when he heard Zac’s story. That’s why he decided to donate money to fund Zac’s treatment!

“This boy is four years old and needs money to get him to America to get the help he needs,” Simon said. “So I want you please to go on Zac Oliver’s JustGiving page and whatever you can donate will make a difference. And because I don’t like well-known people telling people to do something and don’t do anything themselves, I’m going to donate £50,000. We’re going to get there.”

“Thank you, Simon Cowell,” said Zac’s mother. “I explained to Zac that Simon has helped to pay for his special medicine. Zac said ‘thanks Si,’ lol. Little does he know how much closer we really are to getting him to the US.”

God bless Simon for doing this! Watch Simon talk more about this in the video below!
