Mary Carlisle, one of the last surviving actresses of the golden age of Hollywood, passed away on August 1 at the age of 104.

The blonde actress appeared in 65 movies during her career, and she was a well known star in the 1930s. Carlisle was arguably best known for costarring alongside Hollywood legend Bing Crosby in three musicals in the 1930s. These three films were College Humor (1933), Double or Nothing (1937) and Doctor Rhythm (1938). She was also known for playing a giggling honeymooner in the classic Greta Garbo film Grand Hotel (1932).

Born in Boston in 1914, Carlisle soon moved to Hollywood with her widowed mother. She was discovered at the age of 14 by producer Carl Laemmle Jr. while she was having lunch at the Universal commissary. Though she was given a screen test, she did not sign with a studio until MGM signed her in 1930.

Carlisle scored a major career boost in 1933 when she was chosen as a “Baby Star” by the Western Association of Motion Picture. This honor was given to actresses who were considered to be on the brink of stardom, and other honorees her year included Ginger Rogers and Gloria Stuart.

Carlisle married James Blakeley, an actor who went on to become head of post-production at 20th Century Fox, in 1942. She remained married to him until his death in 2007, and they had one son together who survives her.

Carlisle retired from acting for good and went on to manage Elizabeth Arden hair salons in Beverly Hills, California. However, an interview she gave in the 1940s makes it clear that she had been considering leaving acting for quite some time before that. Just after having some glamor photos taken in 1937, Carlisle told reporters, “I’ve played sweet young heroines long enough.”
