Police in the United States are speaking out to warn the public that “tipsy” birds have been flying into windows and cars after sucking down fermented berries.

The Gilbert Police Department in Minnesota has received many calls recently about the “confused” birds, who people have said look to be “under the influence.” Experts believe that since the frost came early this year, the berries have fermented earlier than they usually do, which has led to the birds literally flying drunk!

“Many birds have not migrated south, so it appears to be more prevalent than in past years. It appears that some birds are getting a little more ‘tipsy’ than normal,” the Gilbert Police Department said in a statement.

Officials went on to explain that the younger birds cannot handle the toxins in the berries “as efficiently as more mature birds.” They also reassured the public that the animals will eventually sober up, so there is no reason to panic.

Officials also said that members of the public should not call police unless they see “Bigbird operating a motor vehicle in an unsafe manner” or “Tweety acting as if 10ft tall and getting into confrontations with cats.”

National Parks Service ranger Sharon Stiteler was not surprised when she heard about this. She explained that robins and cedar waxwings eat crabapples, which contain sugar that can turn into alcohol when they lose moisture. She added that drunk birds were “totally a thing.”

The moral of this story is don’t drink and fly, folks!
