Halloween is right around the corner, which means that many Americans are aching to get out and experience haunted houses. That’s why we’ve compiled six of the best real-life haunted houses in the United States that you will definitely want to visit!

The Whaley House: San Diego, California

James “Yankee Jim” Robinson was hanged for larceny back in 1852. A few years later, Thomas and Anna Whaley built a house on the spot where he died, and it didn’t take long for “Yankee Jim” to start coming back to haunt the place! He’s been known to be heard stomping around the house, and he has since been joined by the ghosts of both the Whaleys, a young girl, and the family dog. The U.S. Commerce Department officially designated this house as haunted back in 1960.

Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast: Fall River, Massachusetts

Andrew and Abby Borden were hacked to death in this home in 1892. Their daughter Lizzie stood trial for their murder, but ended up being acquitted for it. Since her death in 1927, Lizzie has been haunting the home, and she is known to stand at the top of the stairs and laugh. You can spend the night at the home, if you dare to.

Amityville Horror House: Amityville, New York

In 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. brutally murdered his mother, father, two sisters, and two brothers in their sleep, and he has been in prison ever since. Afterwards, a couple with three young children bought the home, and they quickly began experiencing strange occurrences. These occurrences included hearing strange noises, swarms of flies invading the house, finding cloven pig hooves in the snow, and their young daughter making a frightening imaginary friend. They moved out after just 28 days, and their experience inspired the movie The Amityville Horror.

Myrtles Plantation: St. Francisville, Louisiana

Legend has it that this plantation was build on top of an Indian burial ground in 1796. It is now said to be home to 12 different ghosts, including a former slave Chloe, who had her ear chopped off for eavesdropping. Chloe then got revenge by poisoning her master’s two daughters, killing them both. She was hanged after this by her fellow slaves, and she has haunted the home ever since with a turban covering her ear.

The Biltmore Estate: Asheville, North Carolina

The largest home in the United States, it is still haunted by it’s original owners, George and Edith Vanderbilt. George died in 1914 and Edith died in 1958, and they have been known to haunt the home ever since, walking around laughing in certain rooms.

The White House

The most famous home in the United States is known to be haunted, with many residents and visitors saying they have seen the ghosts of Abraham Lincoln, Abigail Adams, and Andrew Jackson. FDR, Dwight Eisenhower, and Winston Churchill each claimed to see the ghosts of Lincoln. Also, the Obama family said they often heard strange sounds and felt gnawing on their feet at night.
