A Michigan man just got the shock of his life when he learned that the rock he had been using as a doorstop since 1988 was actually a meteorite worth around $100,000.
The man, who has not revealed his name to the press, had known that the rock came from outer space ever since he bought the home. At the time, the previous owner had walked him around the farm property that the home is located on and showed him the rock, which he said fell in a meteor shower in the 1930s.
Both men assumed the rock was not worth any money, so it’s been sitting in the man’s home being used as a doorstop ever since. It was only this year that the man heard that people were selling small pieces of meteorites for large sums of money.
“I said, ‘Wait a minute. I wonder how much mine is worth,” he recalled.
Wanting to know how much his rock was worth, he brought it to Mona Sirbescu, a geology faculty member in earth and atmospheric sciences at Central Michigan University. She was stunned as soon as she laid eyes on the rock.
“I could tell right away that this was something special,” she said, explaining that this is the sixth-largest meteorite found in Michigan.
“It’s the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically,” she said.
Though the meteorite has not sold at this time, the Smithsonian Museum is considering purchasing it, as is another collector. Check out this amazing rock for yourself in the video below!
