We would hope that when most people would see a mother of five children struggling to get them through checkout at Walmart, they would show compassion for her. Sadly, that’s not what happened in this story.
Lindsay Rae was at Walmart when she noticed a mother of five desperately trying to wrangle her kids as she checked out at the store. Lindsay herself is a mother of nine children, seven of whom are adopted, so she knew firsthand what this mother was going through. That’s why she was furious when she saw a well-dressed couple who were behind the mother in line start to whisper rude comments very loudly about the struggling mom.
“How many baby daddies do you think she has?” they asked, pointing out that the kids were a mix of Hispanic and Caucasian.
“Can’t even dress those kids for weather,” they continued mockingly. “Just wait until she whips out the food stamps.”
When the mother finally did take out her food stamps card, they sighed loudly and exclaimed, “There’s our tax dollars neatly at work.”
Lindsay was horrified by what she saw, so she took action. She began by shooting the couple a “death glare only a mother of 9 can execute to perfection.” She then walked up to the mother and asked, “Can I help? These things are so confusing.”
“Foster or adopted?” Lindsay asked quietly. “I have 9 kiddos…two bio, I get it, please let me help.”
The embarrassed mother smiled at her and replied, “New foster mom. This is my first time using one of these. [The kids] came 3 days ago, gonna be with us for a while.”
The mother went on to say that while she had been given food for them, the children had no winter clothes and the stipend hadn’t come through yet.
“Beautiful children,” Lindsay told the mother. “I am glad you all have each other.”
Lindsay did not stop there! As soon as the mother and children left, she walked right up to the couple who had been mocking them.
“Those children? They lost the right to live with their parents just days ago,” she said. “Those clothes? Probably the only clothes they own, or got to leave their home with. THAT woman? Opened her home to kids, kids that needed a safe place to go when the one they lived in no longer proved safe enough or secure enough for them. The food stamps, something health and welfare [gives to help a mother of] two feed three new mouths. There are not nearly enough women or people like her this world.”
“AND even IF those kids were all hers, and she had a dozen ‘baby daddies’ and was on food stamps..no child in this country or any other deserves to be cold or hungry, I am sorry, but your behavior? Poorly done, VERY poorly done,” she continued.
The couple had nothing to say back to that, and they ran off to another register with their tails between their legs!
When it came time for Lindsay to pay, the girl checking her out smiled and winked.
“Single mother on WIC,” she said to Lindsay. “What you said? Rocked!”
“You foster mama’s out there…hold your heads high,” Lindsay concluded her Facebook post, “you are the hands and hearts that are the strong and the steady for small ones when they need it most. Hats off and so much love today to you.”
We’re glad to see that this mom stepped in to help another mother who needed her help!
