A California police officer is being hailed as a hero after he pushed an elderly woman one mile to her house when he saw that her electric wheelchair had run out of power.

Lancaster Deputy Steven Montanez and his partner Shane Chapman were on duty when they were called about a wheelchair in the middle of the road. They arrived to find that the wheelchair belonged to an elderly woman, and that it had run out of power.

The officers first offered the woman a ride home, but she was “very upset” at the idea of leaving her only “means of mobility” behind. The wheelchair cannot fold because of it’s battery pack, so it could not fit in the officers’ cruiser. That’s why Montanez, in his full uniform and boots, decided to push the woman home himself!

He pushed her home for a full mile as Chapman followed them in his police car. Chapman filmed Montanez pushing her, and he jokingly showed the speedometer to show how slow they were going.

“You can pick it up! We’re only about one mile an hour right now,” he said.

The Lancaster Sheriff’s Station posted the video to Facebook, and it quickly went viral, being viewed more than 32,000 times.

“We are so incredibly grateful to all of our deputies for the work they do on a daily basis,” the station wrote in the caption. “My hero wears a badge.”

God bless this officer for helping a woman who needed it! Check out the video for yourself below.
