Fans of the legendary singer Buddy Holly are in mourning this week after Peggy Sue Gerron Rackham, the woman who inspired one of his last songs, passed away. She was 78 years-old.

Peggy Sue reportedly passed away at the University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas on Monday. While her family confirmed her death, they asked that all other information about her death be kept private for now.

Peggy Sue was in high school in Lubbock when she met Buddy and his friends. The singer’s 1958 song “Peggy Sue” was written about her. Back in 2008, Peggy Sue celebrated the 50th anniversary of the song by writing her autobiography, “Whatever Happened to Peggy Sue?: A Memoir by Buddy Holly’s Peggy Sue.”

“I wanted to give him (Holly) his voice. It’s my book, my memoirs,” she said at the time. “We were very, very good friends. He was probably one of the best friends I ever had.”

Peggy Sue ended up marrying drummer Jerry Allison, who was in Buddy’s band The Crickets, but they eventually divorced. Peggy Sue’s son-in-law Tom Stathos said that the song “Peggy Sue” was nearly named after a completely different girl.

“It was originally going to be Cindy Lou (Holly’s niece) and that he (Allison) wanted to impress Peggy Sue so he got Buddy to change the name,” he said.

Buddy wrote a sequel to “Peggy Sue” called “Peggy Sue Got Married” before he died in 1959 plane crash that also killed Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson.

Rest in peace, Peggy Sue!
