Zookeepers at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park are used to seeing a lot of strange things when they are at work. However, even the most seasoned of the zookeepers there were stunned earlier this week when they went to check on a pregnant elephant.
The elephant was due to give birth in a few weeks, which is why it came as a huge surprise when the zookeepers saw a baby elephant walking around with her! Umngani wasn’t pregnant anymore, as she had given birth to a healthy baby girl overnight!
Umngani was already a mother of three who had gone past her due date with each of her other babies. Since she was not due for another few weeks, zookeepers assumed that it would be awhile before she gave birth. However, it seems that her fourth baby was in quite a rush to get out and experience the world!
“Late last night, a little girl joined our elephant herd. Umngani’s fourth calf is well on her way to becoming Zuli’s new favorite playmate,” the zoo wrote on Facebook last week.
Not only was the elephant’s birth a surprise, her weight was as well! The baby weighed in at 281 pounds when zookeepers weighed her. The average weight of a newborn elephant is between 200 and 268 pounds, so this new baby broke a record for the zoo!
The Safari Park also posted an adorable video of the rest of the herd meeting the new baby. It’s clear that she has already been embraced by her fellow elephants with open arms! Check out this video below!
