When David Foster went on an Amazon River cruise he expected to meet some amazing people and see some incredible sites, but what he didn’t expect was that he’d be taking home something even more special with him than just memories.

One of the places the boat docked was a deserted island, except it wasn’t deserted at all. When the passengers got off the boat, they were greeted by a skeletal black dog. Foster immediately went to the dog and began petting her.

By the looks of her, she had been left on the island to die, even though she was as friendly as could be. Foster immediately made a connection with her and named her Negrita. He knew he couldn’t leave her there and asked the boat’s crew if he could bring her with him.

Negrita stayed on the boat the rest of the day while it was docked on the island. The crew fed her and played with her, but not everyone was happy about the new passenger. So in the dark before the boat left, one of them untied her and sent her back to shore.

The crew and Foster didn’t realize what had happened and headed on down the river without Negrita. Foster woke up in the middle of the night with a sense that something was wrong. He went looking for Negrita, but couldn’t find her anywhere. He told the captain they had to go back for her.

When they returned to the island, Negrita was patiently waiting on the shore for their return. Foster was relieved to have her back on the boat, so much so that he decided he was taking her back home with him to Northern Ireland.

When they docked at the next city, Foster went looking for a veterinarian. He found a woman who spoke English and told her Negrita’s story. The woman agreed to care for Negrita until Foster could get her to Ireland.

It took him five months and loads of paperwork to get Negrita to Ireland, but when he met her at the airport, he was shocked to see how happy and healthy she was. Her foster mom had taken amazing care of her.

Foster took her home and she settled into life with him quickly. Now she loves going on walks and hanging out with her dad as much as she can. To learn more about her story, check out the video below and be sure to share it with your family and friends.
