When you think of poverty and homelessness, we often think of foreign countries. But sadly, there are plenty of homeless people living in poverty right here in the United States, and Mick Myers was one of them.

Mick was living in the streets of California all alone. He’d stand on the highway panhandling for cash. He’d never had children of his own or been married. The only family he knew was his adopted mother. He felt ignored and alone in the world.

To forget about his pain and loneliness he turned to music. He would play outside a train station for whatever money people would give him. Luckily, he got the attention of someone who would finally help him.

Deputy Jacob Swalwell of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department had seen Mick several times and issued him warnings for begging for money. He knew he needed to issue him a citation, but realized that wouldn’t help make Mick’s situation any better.

So instead, he got to know more about Mick and what put him on the streets. He discovered that Mick had no identification cards, no social security, and had no one to turn to that could help him.

So Jacob decided to be the one to help. He became determined to help Mick get his life on track. He helped him obtain an ID and got him on Medicaid and set up to receive social security benefits.

But Jacob’s kindness didn’t stop there. He had a friend in the department that helped Mick connect with his birth mother and all of the family that he never knew he had.

Check out the video below to learn more about Mick’s story and watch the reunion with his mother. Be sure to share this heartwarming story with your family and friends.
