Today marks 21 years since Princess Diana passed away, but she is still dearly missed by millions of people. While people all over the world adored Diana, nobody misses her more than her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

During her lifetime, Diana was a devoted mother who did everything she could to make the lives of her sons easier. Now, a secret interview of hers from 1991 has surfaced that shows the huge sacrifice she made for her sons and their future wives, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.

In the interview, Diana confessed that she had never felt comfortable in “the system,” which is the term she used to describe the strict British royal family. She had a difficult time dealing with all the strict restrictions the royal family placed on her, but she continued to push through them for one huge reason.

“I am altering it for him, William, but in a subtle way,” Diana said in the interview. “Through William learning what I do and his father, to a certain extent he has got an insight of what’s coming his way. He is not hid upstairs with the governess.”

Diana worked tirelessly to break down these restrictions just so that William, Harry, and their wives could have more freedom one day. Known as the “people’s princess,” Diana thought that the royal family should be more accessible to the public and have more freedom to move around. It’s safe to say her efforts paid off, as William, Harry, Kate, and Meghan are known as some of the most accessible royals in history. They would never have had the freedom to be this way were it not for Diana paving the path for them.
