Twins aren’t uncommon in the panda world, and although they are born frequently, mother pandas don’t always do the best job of keeping up with both cubs.
Sadly, the mother will usually select one of the babies to nurture and will let nature run its course with the other baby. That’s why Lee Lee’s zookeepers came up with a plan to keep both of her babies alive.
Instead of letting nature take it’s course with Lee Lee’s twins, the zookeepers tricked her into thinking that she only gave birth to one cub. While it may be easy for us to judge Lee Lee for her actions, humans handle their babies much differently than mother pandas do.

For animals, it is about keeping the mother alive as well as one baby and more if possible. Panda mothers don’t just neglect one baby out of spite as experts believe that they simply don’t have the energy or milk supply to care for two babies.
So Lee Lee’s zookeepers decided that they would need to step in with patience and courage to help her care for both babies. Up to ten times a day, they switched out her babies.

A zookeeper will distract Lee Lee with honey water as they grab the cub from her paws and switch it out with the other. The process typically takes several scary minutes to complete, but once it’s done, Lee Lee never knows the difference.
