We all carry some stereotypes of what a grandmother should look like or what she should be doing. Most of us imagine a sweet, elderly lady baking cookies and knitting scarves. However, as the oldest bodybuilder in Australia at 75 years of age, Janice Lorraine is blowing this narrative out of the water!

Janice is a grandmother from Granville, Sydney who began bodybuilding at the age of 55, and though she is now halfway through her 70s, she has no plans of slowing down! She is already preparing to take the stage to compete once again at a competition in 2019, and she will almost undoubtedly be the oldest in her category.

Janice recently opened up about her “nude food” approach to diet that she says keeps her in amazing shape.

“My aim is to show what’s possible and to motivate and encourage women of any age, to live the life they want to live and not be bound by traditional stereotypes and roles and the expectations of others,” said Janice, a former psychologist. She went on to explain that she took up bodybuilding twenty years ago in the hopes of staying in shape after retirement. Her determination saw her “marching into the male-dominated weights room” and start Weight Resistance Training (WRT).

“I had heard that WRT was good for bone density and that it had been shown to be effective in preventing osteoporosis and so, in January 1998 I began WRT and decided that I would become a natural bodybuilder,” she said.

Since then, Janice has competed in numerous competitions and taken home Ms. Universe, Ms. World and Ms. Olympia titles in her time.

She explained that her strict diet consists of “natural nude food,” meaning food that is served without condiments or sauces. Janice’s diet mainly consists of unprocessed food, salads and a small piece of microwaved sweet potato. The bodybuilder gets her protein from grilled chicken, grilled fish and eye fillet steak.

Janice treats herself to one biscuit and one square of 90 per cent sugar-free chocolate per day, and she always has dinner with a glass of wine.

Janice works out rigorously six days a week, and she wants to show other women that they can do anything in life.

“My aim is not to rival those younger than me. My aim is to show what’s possible and to motivate and encourage women of any age,” she said.
