Back in the 1950s, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz appeared to have the perfect marriage. They starred together on the hit television program “The Lucille Ball Show,” and millions of people tuned in to watch them every week. At the time, however, their fans had no idea that their marriage was actually falling apart off-screen.

Ball and Arnaz met when they starred in the musical comedy Too Many Girls, and they married two months after the movie was released.

Ball filed for divorce for the first time in 1944, just four years into their marriage, but they ended up working things out. In 1950, Ball made sure that Arnaz was hired to star with her on her show, much to the dismay of Bob Weiskopf, an original writer for the show.

“At the time the consensus was, ‘What the hell do we want with a Latin bandleader who can’t speak English?” he said in 1991. “She knew that if he went on the road with the band, he’d be catting around all the time.”

After the show became a success, Arnaz stepped up his womanizing and alcoholism. Finally, Ball had enough and she divorced him in 1960.

“They were fighting all the time. Their divorce was horrible. And then there was the alcoholism,” said their daughter Lucie Arnaz. “We didn’t have any abuse, but we did go through some pretty hard stuff and that’s why my parents didn’t stay together.”

Though it’s been years since they passed away, Ball and Arnaz remain beloved legends to this day! SHARE this story so your friends and family can see this as well!
