Meghan Markle celebrated her 37th birthday on Saturday by attending the wedding of one of Prince Harry’s longtime friends. Now, it’s being reported that Meghan will have to give back the majority of birthday presents she received for a surprising reason.

Members of the royal family have to be careful about what gifts they accept, and there are a number of rules and guidelines they must follow when they are given any kind of present.

“The fundamental principle governing the acceptance of gifts by Members of The Royal Family is that no gifts, including hospitality or services, should be accepted which would, or might appear to, place the Member of The Royal Family under any obligation to the donor,” the royal family guidelines state.

If Meghan is given a gift by a business or fashion designer, she must decline it. The only acceptation to this rule comes when the gift is a souvenir from an official visit. She is allowed to accept gifts from a public body, as long as they are located in the United Kingdom. These public bodies include government bodies, trade associations, guilds, civic bodies, the armed services, charities or similar organizations.

Meghan is only allowed to accept gifts from fans if they fall into one of three categories. These categories are:

  • flowers or food
  • books presented by the author, as long as the subject matter isn’t controversial
  • other gifts which cost less than £150.

Meghan has only been in the royal family for a few months, so she is likely still getting used to all of these rules. We hope she still enjoyed her birthday, even though she had to give back most of her gifts!
