Every birth is a miracle, but some are more miraculous than others. One baby was recently born that has really taken the world by storm and everyone has been watching. Why you ask? Because his birth could save a species from extinction.
Malindi, a rare black rhino gave birth to a healthy baby at the Chester Zoo at Upton by Chester, in Cheshire, England. After having her pregnancy watched for 15 months, she gave birth during zoo hours much to the delight of tourists who got to watch.
The labor lasted about a half hour, and although most rhinos give birth at night, Malindi’s baby just couldn’t wait. Within 15 minutes of his birth, the baby was up and bouncing about the enclosure.

There are only roughly 650 black rhinos left in the world. It was just last year that the last male northern white rhino died in Kenya, leaving behind just his daughter and granddaughter.
Rhinos are critically endangered, so the birth of this little calf is a miraculous and wonderful addition to the species. It gives us hope that their numbers could still rise again.

The tiny rhino is feeding regularly and has bonded well with his mother. Malindi gave birth to a rhino calf earlier so the baby will have a sibling to look after him too.
Chester Zoo has had 11 healthy black rhinos in the last 20 years, an amazing achievement for their conservation and breeding efforts. We can only hope that this new baby will raise some much needed attention to this species.

Check out the video below of the new baby and be sure to share this story with your family and friends. We cannot allow another species to become extinct!
