It’s rare that someone is able to live to be well over 100 years old. That’s why whenever we come across someone who is a centenarian, we typically ask them what their secret to longevity is, and some of their responses are very interesting. For example, 116 year-old Susannah Mushatt Jones famously said that her secret to a long life was eating bacon!

Now, 109-year-old Jessie Gallan of Scotland has revealed her secret to a long life that may be the most unique one we’ve ever heard!

Born on a farm in Kintore, Scotland in 1906, Gallan had five sisters and one brother. The seven siblings grew up in a two room cottage, with all of them sleeping together on a straw-filled mattress.

Gallan had to quit school early so that she could work in a farm kitchen and then a housemaid in the city for a wealthy businessman. She followed this by having a lengthy career in the service industry in both the city and the countryside. Gallan eventually moved into Crosby House, which is a residential care home for seniors.

“Jessie is a lovely woman. She has got her best friend here, Sarah Jane, and they are always together,” said Gillian Bennett, one of her care workers. “She likes her music and likes her exercise class and is a very independent person. She is always walking about.”

Sadly, Gallan passed away in March of 2015, but before her death, she revealed a secret to longevity that nobody was expecting!

“My secret to a long life has been staying away from men,” said Gallan. “They’re just more trouble than they’re worth.”

LOL! I think there may be some women out there that would agree with this!
