A man just had to have his legs amputated after he got sepsis from what doctors believe was his dog licking him.

Greg Manteufel, 48, started getting flu-like symptoms and was feeling delirious when bruises started popping up all over his body. As his wife Dawn rushed him to the hospital, she noticed the bruises growing, later saying that it “looked like somebody beat him up with a baseball bat.”

Greg went into septic shock just moments after arriving at a Wisconsin-area hospital at the end of June. When doctors tested his blood, they found that he had contracted a potentially fatal bacteria to humans through a dog, likely his own.

A New York Animal Hospital spokesperson said that it’s “extremely rare” for humans to become ill after contact with Capnocytophaga canimorsus, which doctors found in Greg’s blood. This bacteria is found in dog and cat saliva, and in rare instances, it cause infections if it comes into contact with a burn or an open wound.

Doctors had no choice but to amputate Greg’s arms and legs. He remains in the hospital at this time, as doctors think they will also have to amputate part of his nose. A GoFundMe page has raised over $30,000 to pay for his medical bills.

“During this process while his family and friends are in panic and chaos Greg has held his head high and is taking all the news like a beast,” a description for the page read. “He is so thankful to be alive today and is taking one day at a time.”

Greg has been a dog lover for his entire life.

“We can’t wrap our heads around it that all of the sudden, he’s 48 years old and been around dogs all of his life… and this happens,” Dawn lamented.
