Just like many other newlywed couples, it is likely that the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex are thinking about starting a family. Both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been fairly outspoken about their desire to start a family.
How soon that family will begin has yet to be revealed, but when it does come time for the duo to add on to the family, there will be one very notable difference between Prince Harry and Meghan’s children and the children of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
What could that difference be? Yes, they might get Harry’s red hair, but the big difference could be in their last names. It is likely that any children of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex won’t take on the traditional last name.
Traditionally, the last name Mountbatten-Windsor is the name for direct descendants of The Queen, however, it is likely that Prince Harry and Meghan’s children will take the name Sussex. This isn’t such a surprise if you look back at the past.
When William and Harry were at school, they were known as William and Harry Wales, a consequence of their dad being Prince Charles of Wales. Kensington Palace has confirmed that Prince George is known as George Cambridge on the school register because his dad is Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.
Up until 1917, the Royal Family didn’t even use last names, so it is likely that any future children of Harry and Meghan will adopt the last name of Sussex. Whenever that joyful day comes, I’m sure we’ll all be ready and waiting!
