It’s been nearly 21 years since Princess Diana passed away in a car crash, but she is still dearly missed by millions of people all over the world.

After the fatal car accident in 1997, conspiracy theories immediately started to swirl about what really happened. Witnesses also began to come forward to reveal the heartbreaking final words that they heard Princess Diana say.

French doctor Frederic Mailliez was one of the first people on the scene, and as he treated Diana, he had no idea that she was royalty. Mailliez said that as Diana struggled to breathe, she kept crying out and talking about how much pain she was in until she fell unconscious. Others said that they heard Diana shouting, “Oh my God, leave me alone.”

French firefighter Xavier Gourmelon was also one of the first people to arrive at the scene, and he was with Diana when she was taken out of the Mercedes. As rescuers took her out of the car, Gourmelon said that he heard Diana say, “My God, what’s happened?” Gourmelon gave Diana CPR and said that she seemed stable when she was loaded into the ambulance. He kept his experience a secret until he left the fire department in 2007 because firefighters in France are not allowed to talk to the media.
