Back in July of 2012, then-36 year-old Rob Mooberry was rushed to the hospital with a perforated colon. After doing some tests on him, doctors gave Rob the horrifying news that he had stage 4 colorectal cancer which had spread to his bowels, lymph nodes, and liver.

Needless to say, Rob and his family were all devastated.

Rob was stunned, as cancer did not run in his family. He had just moved from Las Vegas to Los Angeles with his now-wife Amanda, who he had been dating for nine months at the time. Though they had not even been together a year yet, Amanda made it clear that she had no intention of leaving his side.

“[Amanda] came into the hospital, the doctor took her to one side and said basically that there was about an eight percent chance I would live… I couldn’t believe it.  I was always a healthy person, I didn’t expect it,” Rob said. “She was so upset; my family was so upset.  The doctors weren’t really telling me all of this but I knew it was serious, I thought I was going to die… But Amanda stuck with me.  She could have left me, but she stayed.  That’s when you know love is true.”

When doctors told Rob his treatment options, he learned that he was looking at a colostomy bag, followed by an ileostomy, and radiation therapy on top of two bouts (at least) of chemotherapy. As Rob sat in the hospital with Amanda, he leaned over and said, “I want to get married.” Two weeks before his treatment began, they tied the knot, and they have been together ever since!

After undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy, Rob’s cancer was downgraded to stage 3A. As soon as he was diagnosed, however, Rob did something that he now believes is what put his cancer into remission: he changed his diet to a plant-based diet.

“I just wanted to be as healthy as possible.”[1] It wasn’t hard either, seeing as Amanda has always been vegetarian,” Rob said. “At first, I wasn’t all raw vegan, it was just vegetarian. To be honest, it was easier for us to just cook one meal rather than two, so being plant-based was straightforward.”

Though doctors wanted him to continue with treatments, Rob decided not to do it.

“It was horrible.  I had to take time off work, I had no energy, I felt sick,” Rob recalled. “That kind of medicine puts so many chemicals in your body… I needed to heal. That’s when I knew I needed to do anything to beat this cancer.  I was really willing to try anything to save my life.  That’s when I went hardcore raw, vegan, superfoods.”

Rob stopped all cancer treatment and continued eating a vegan diet that also cut out all sugars from his diet, including red meat and dairy. Six months later, in early 2013, Rob went back in for a scan and found that his cancer had downgraded by 80 percent! By the next year, there was absolutely no trace of his cancer!

Rob has now been cancer free for five years, and he is loving life with Amanda and their 20 month-old twins!

“It’s crazy to think that a few years ago we had all the odds stacked against us,” Amanda said. “But it just goes to show you that love can create miracles.”

“I’m not standing on a soapbox saying everyone needs to go plant-based and vegan,” Rob said. “But if you’re going to ask me what worked for me, I’ll tell you: this diet.”
