The Michigan Village of Omena recently inaugurated it’s fourth ever mayor into office. The surprising mayor? A local cat named Sweet Tart. The cat had previously served as the vice mayor of the village, and will now serve as mayor until the next election in 2021.

The 9-year-old feline was elected in an election that featured votes being cast online for $1 donations that went to the local historical society. “While I’m home schooled, I graduated first in my class!” Sweet Tart’s campaign profile boasted.

Officials for the election said there was a record number of votes cast in the election. About 7,000 votes were cast, including several online. The village has had an animal for mayor for more than a decade.

Officials say they suspect that there were so many votes coming from outside of the immediate area because of the publicity and the ability of the internet to spread the news. Also having people pay via PayPal has expanded the number of people that were able to participate.

Sweet Tart’s opponents in the race included 13 dogs, a goat, chicken, peacock, and another cat. All were awarded positions on the village council.
