Queen Elizabeth’s mother lived to be over 100-years-old, so there’s no reason to believe that Queen Elizabeth herself won’t make it at least a few more years. Still, there is plenty of speculation about what will happen when the 92-year-old monarch passes down the crown.

The natural order of succession dictates that Prince Charles, her eldest son, will take over the Sovereign once she’s done, but with Charles’ history being more than a little scandalous, some of called for him to be passed over and giving the seat to Prince William who is second in line.

Queen Elizabeth has surely heard the calls for a breach in royal protocol, but it is highly unlikely that she will heed the wishes of some of her subjects. However, it is possible for William to take the throne instead of Charles but most people probably haven’t even thought of it.

Prince Charles will be 70 in November, so even if he became king soon, he would be the oldest monarchy to take the throne. If Queen Elizabeth reigns for another 10  years, which is possible with her family history of longevity, that would make Charles 80.

Although Prince Charles appears to be in good health; the longevity of the men in the family doesn’t seem to be quite as long as that of the females. If Prince Charles would predecease his mother, the throne would automatically pass to the oldest son of the late Prince of Wales, which would be Prince William.

While this is highly unlikely to happen, it is within the realm of possibility. So for those who are rooting for William to be the next King, this might just be your opportunity.
