Darwin Wallace is a 12 year-old boy from St. Louis, Missouri who is being hailed as a hero after he rescued his entire family when he awoke to find a fire ripping through their home in the middle of the night.

Darwin was woken up by a tree falling against his window, and he was stunned to find that his house was on fire. The blaze is believed to have been started when neighborhood kids lit fireworks outside the house.

“We all was asleep and I heard the fire, like the tree started hitting on my window and I woke up, took my nephew, put him on my neck, and then I went to go get everybody else up,” Darwin recounted.

Darwin’s three siblings, his mother, grandmother, and a niece and nephew were sleeping inside the home when the fire erupted. The little boy was able to wake them all up and get them outside, where the family had to break a fence to escape the flames.

Everything inside the home was destroyed, but the family is just thankful to have escaped with their lives.

Surveillance footage shows two youths with fireworks outside the home right before the fire, and police are still investigating what went down.

“If you are going to pop them on other peoples’ porches, that’s just wrong because you don’t know who’s in that house and you can kill somebody like you almost killed us,” Darwin said.
