A disturbing new report has stated that an army veteran and his wife are thinking about divorcing just so they can afford their daughter’s healthcare.

Maria and Jake Grey are a Texas couple whose 6 year-old daughter Brighton needs around-the-clock care because she suffers from a rare chromosomal disorder called Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome. This disorder leads to hearing and vision impairments, seizures, and heart and kidney problems.

Though they have health insurance, the Greys still spend $15,000 each year out of pocket for Brighton’s care, which is more than 30 percent of their annual income.

“I used to get anxiety just opening the mail because I was scared of what would come or what bill would come or what denial would come,” Maria said.

Jake, who served in the U.S. military, makes $40,000 a year, meaning their family does not qualify for Medicaid. While the Greys have applied for assistance from the state, they’re No. 59,979 on the waiting list. In addition, they also have another 2 year-old daughter named Fairen to take care of.

Maria and Jake have come to the heartbreaking conclusion that divorce is their best option to afford paying for health care. If divorced, Maria is then a single, jobless mother of two on paper, and qualify for Medicaid.

“We promised to each other and to her that we’d do whatever we could do to make her life, however long she’s going to be with us, as good as possible,” Maria said. “It would be divorce. It would be to not be together to get our child what we need.”

“We’ve just struggled and struggled with it, and now we’ve gotten to the point, where we feel it’s a real possibility,” Jake said, adding that he thinks what’s happening to his family is“morally wrong.”

“For someone to kind of make you choose between your marriage and your child is just — it’s just a really weird spot to be in,” he said.

It’s sad that someone who served his country is being put in this position! Find out more about this in the video below, and SHARE this story so your friends and family can see this as well!
