Rumors are swirling that Queen Elizabeth is preparing to step down after a major shakeup was announced at Buckingham Palace.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Sally Osman, the Director of Royal Communications, and Steve Kingstone, the Queen’s Media Secretary, are each stepping down from their positions. Reports have surfaced that they are stepping down because their positions are going to be merged.
The swiftness of their departures has caused many to speculate that the Queen is about to step down and allow her son Prince Charles to rule the nation. This move came a week after the British government performed a dress rehearsal for the Queen’s death, marking the first time ministers had practiced this protocol. Over the weekend, the Queen triggered fears over a health scare when she did not attend a service at St Paul’s Cathedral.
Reports are also coming out that Charles is pushing for Camilla to become queen. His office just deleted all reference to a statement made before the couple got married in 2005 when Charles said that when he became King his second wife would not use the normal title of Queen Consort out of respect for the memory of Princess Diana.
In the past few months, Queen Elizabeth has handed over a lot of her commonwealth duties onto Prince Harry and his new wife Meghan Markle. Her 97 year-old husband, Prince Philip, retired from royal duties last year, and at 92 years of age herself, the Queen may be planning to do the same.
