Though brothers and sisters may fight sometimes, they are always there for each other when it matters most. In this story, an older brother goes above and beyond to help his little sister when she was hit with a devastating blow.

When 17 year-old Mohammad Hasher saw his 6 year-old sister Noor Sabah sitting on the couch sad in their Portage, Michigan home, he knew he had to do something.

“I said, ‘Noor, what’s wrong?’” Mohammad recalled. “She told me there was a father-daughter dance at school and that she couldn’t go.”

Noor felt like she could not go to the dance because their father had just walked out on their family, but Mohammad was not having any of it.,

“There was no hesitation on my end, I shouted, ‘I’ll take you to the daddy-daughter dance!'” he recounted.

Mohammad and Noor fight sometimes like all siblings do, but he didn’t let these rough patches get in the way of helping her.

“She gets on my nerves a lot, but we’re so close. We lean on each other for support and depend on each other for happiness,” he said. “She’s my world and my ray of sunshine!”

Noor and Mohammad had a blast together at the dance, and she is “so thankful” that he went with her.

“We had a lot of fun,” the first-grader said. “He looked very good, and he is so funny.”

Mohammad recalled how Noor reacted when he asked her to accompany him to the dance.

“She goes, “Wait, are you serious?!’” said Mohammad. “She doesn’t like to talk about dad, and I  know I needed to be a father figure for her.”

Their mother Sadia Karamat was very proud when she heard of Mohammad’s plan.

“He’s such a good big brother,” she said. “I”m so proud of him for stepping up.”

“I just hope people know it’s important to make sure you are being there for your family,” says  Mohammad. “Whether it’s your daughter, nephew, cousin… Just be there for them when you need to fill a void when they need you.”
