A Connecticut man says it was his poor memory that made his prize winnings double after he accidentally bought two lottery tickets with the same numbers. His winnings were doubled to a whopping $200,000.

John Smedick, Jr., of Torrington, says he told Connecticut lottery officials he couldn’t remember if he had already purchased a Cash 5 ticket for the upcoming drawing so he bought another one just in case.

He always plays the same numbers that represent his wedding date and the birthdays of family members. For the June 29 drawing, this meant he had two identical tickets with the number 5-19-27-30-35.

It was his daughter who noticed that he had two identical Cash 5 tickets, which turned out to be the winning numbers for the Friday evening drawing. He still can’t believe that his forgetfulness turned out to be his lucky charm.

“It turns out I played it, forgot I played it, then played it again. Smedick said. “My daughter went to the lottery’s website and saw there were two $100,000 winning Cash 5 tickets. Both of them were mine. I won $200,000. It was the best mistake I’ve ever made.”

Smedick says he’s never won this much money before and he plans to pay off some bills, take his wife and children on a little vacation, and put the rest of the money in the bank.

Sounds like a good plan to us! Be sure to share this lucky man’s story with your family and friends.
