A 45-year-old woman was exiting the Orange Line train at Massachusetts Avenue in Boston when she lost her footing and got her leg caught in the gap between the platform and the train. It didn’t take long for other commuters to come to her rescue.

Her leg slid down into the gap giving her a deep cut that went all the way down to the bone. A group of men quickly surrounded the woman and began coordinating her rescue. Eventually the men pushed together to move the locomotive off the woman’s leg and free her.

Once released the woman begged the commuters not to call an ambulance because of the cost of paying for the call. Instead, rescuers compressed her leg with a wrap and made sure she made it to Boston Medical Center.

Her thigh was found to have a serious laceration that exposed the bone and required surgery to repair. Boston EMS chief Jim Hooley said that an ambulance call out typically cost around $1,900, but they reassure patients that nothing bad is going to happen to them just because they cannot pay.
