Summer is the perfect time for backyard barbecues, but before you consider giving your pet pooch a taste of what you’re cooking, you need to know what is okay for them to eat and what’s not. Not everything we humans eat is okay for our animals.

Whenever there is food, they’ll likely be right there begging for a bite, but before you cave in to those puppy dog eyes, check out this list of 11 foods that you should never share with your pet.

1. Grapes – While they may seem harmless, grapes and raisins are incredibly toxic to dogs. Vets aren’t sure what exactly causes the bad reaction, but they can cause dogs to experience vomiting and even kidney failure.

2. Avocado– A little avocado may be okay, but it’s still best to avoid letting your dog have any. Avocados contain persin which can be toxic to dogs. It is in the meat, pit, and skin, so you should do your best to keep all parts of an avocado away from your pooch.

3. Splintering Bones – Just because your dog loves to chew on a bone doesn’t mean that they are all safe. Baby back rib bones, t-bones, and chicken bones all splinter easily and if swallowed can be harmful to your pet.

4. Bacon – Yes, dogs love bacon. But fatty foods can cause pancreatitis in your pup. A nibble here and there isn’t the end of the world, but don’t make it a habit. Bacon is also high in salt which isn’t good for dogs either.

5. Chocolate – While some of us might take for granted that everyone knows dogs shouldn’t eat chocolate, some people still aren’t aware that it can be extremely toxic. Some breeds are more susceptible to trouble from chocolate than others, but you should never give even a morsel to your best friend.

6. Garlic – A member of the Allium family, garlic is very toxic to our furry friends, just like chives, onions, and leeks. Garlic can cause anemia in dogs causing side effects like pale gums, elevated heart rate, and weakness and collapsing.

7. Ice Cream – Ice cream is okay in moderation, but dogs don’t digest dairy very easily. If you want to give them a cool treat on a hot day, try freezing some berries and giving them those instead.

8. Any Kind of Alcohol – If your dog licks up a drop of your favorite pale ale when it splashes on the ground it’s not going to be the end of the world. But if you let them lap up half your glass, it could result in a trip to the vet. It can cause diarrhea, vomiting, breathing problems, and worse.

9. Macadamia Nuts – While peanuts are perfectly fine for your dog, macadamia nuts are quite poisonous for them. The nuts can cause issues with their nervous system resulting in vomiting, increased body temperature, and lethargy.

10. Peaches and Plums – The fruit in peaches and plums is okay, but if a dog gets their paws on the entire thing, chances are they’ll devour the fruit pit and all. The pit is the problem and can result in an intestinal blockage. The pit also contains a form of cyanide which is terribly poisonous to our furry friends.

11. Coffee – No matter how much you think fido would love to share your morning cup of java on the back deck, don’t let him have it. Coffee that contains methylated xanthine acts as a stimulant on your dog’s nervous system and makes it go into overdrive. The result can be vomiting, heart palpitations, restlessness, and much worse.

So what are some treats that are safe to share with your furry friend? Generally they can have lean meats, veggies, peanut butter, and other treats that are healthy for pups. If you aren’t sure what you can share, check with your vet. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Be sure to share this article with your family and friends. No one wants anything to happen to their best furry friend.
