Sam Elliott is a Hollywood icon and his voice is probably one of the top voices that you wish could read you all of your favorite stories. The 73-year-old actor has been acting for decades and he’s stealing the hearts of women now just like he did when he first came onto the big screen.

Because he’s been in the spotlight for so long, there are lots of things that we already know about the star, but there are a few things that you might not have already heard about him. Check out these ten things that you might not know about Sam Elliott:

1. He believes in living in the moment. Instead of thinking about what is coming up or thinking about what has happened in the past, he tries to stay in the present in his day to day life. Elliott said, “It’s about the people I’m working with at the time, and just going in and enjoying the process. It’s hard work, but it’s a creative, artistic process. And if you can’t enjoy that, then you’re going about it wrong.”

2. He’s humble about his mustache. He obviously knows it’s awesome, but when asked about his mustached friend Tom Selleck, Elliott didn’t think it was fair to compare them. “I think it all depends on where we are at the time, you know? Right now I’ve got more of a mustache than Tom does, but I know he can grow one. I don’t think he’s ever grown his out the way I’ve grown mine out over the years,” said Elliott.

3. He was too nervous to approach the woman that he’d one day marry. He’s married to Katherine Ross, but she was already a huge star when they met and he was just getting started. He says he didn’t dare try to talk to her then because he was just a shadow on the was. Eventually they got to know each other and got married, and 30 years later they’re still married.

4. Their honeymoon was interrupted because she made him do an audition. Elliott was called to audition for the movie “Mask” in the role of Cher’s boyfriend. He didn’t want to leave his honeymoon, but when Ross found out, she called back and said he would be there because she knew the opportunity was too good to pass up.

5. He feels blessed. While plenty of people are happy to be married or have a career they love, not everyone has been able to express their happiness the way that Elliott has. “The two things that I wanted in my life were to have a movie career and to be married, to have a family. And it’s an embarrassment of riches that I’ve got both,” said Elliott.

6. He has unresolved issues with his father. Elliott’s dad wasn’t very supportive of his desire to become an actor. Unfortunately, he passed away when Elliott was just 18 and that has been the driving force in his work ethic. Elliott says his father died thinking that his kid was going down the wrong path, but that made him more focused to have a good career.

7. But he credits his dad for being a hard worker. Even before Elliott felt the need to push himself, he says his dad taught him how to work hard. He says, “I was with my dad and my, and his peers, who were all men’s men and outdoorsmen. All had incredible work ethics and were all good men. And they were really the ones I think that I learned what kind of a man I wanted to be when I grew up.”

8. He says the deep voice we all love has changed over the years. Elliott says his voice has aged and evolved over the years. He says it just kept going down the older he got, although he can’t imagine that it is going to go much further.

9. He’s not afraid to be picky when choosing his roles. Elliott definitely isn’t one of the actors that will take whatever role comes his way. He says he’s wanted to be an actor since he was nine-years-old and he figured that the only way to have longevity was to be picky about the kind of work he does. “You can work for money, do a lot of whatever comes your way and not have any kind of yardstick to measure quality by, and people, you know you’ll make a lot of money if you’re lucky, and people will get fed up and sick of seeing you and that’s it onto the next one,” he says.

10. His role in “The Big Lebowksi” was written for him. While reading the script, Elliott says he realized that the writers were thinking of him when they wrote the role that he was auditioning for. He says everything from the voice-over to the clothing described in the pages was similar to him.

So it appears that no matter what Sam Elliott does, he’s going to remain a Hollywood legend. I think we can also agree that he is like a bottle of fine wine that is only getting better with time. Be sure to share this story with your friends. I’ll bet at least one of them loves Sam Elliott too.
