When Officer Michelle Smith from Anderson animal control was called about a dog barking, she didn’t think much of it. When she arrived at the scene, however, she was stunned by what she saw…

Michelle arrived at the scene to find a small dog nursing an abandoned kitten by the side of a creek. The two were discovered cuddling together at the bottom of a deep ravine. Though the dog had a collar around her neck, it was clear that the tiny Shih Tzu had been abandoned. She had then adopted the kitten as her own, and was protecting the baby as they lay together alone.

Michelle brought the two back to her animal control headquarters so that they would be safe. When they got there, the dog refused to be separated from the kitten and continued to nurse her as if she were her own child. After examining the pair, veterinarians said it was clear the dog had been nursing her for quite some time.

Though the 5 year-old Shih Tzu was lactating, there is no evidence she ever had puppies of her own. Veterinarians determined that she was experiencing pseudopregnancy in order to keep the kitten alive.

Workers at the shelter named the dog Goldie and the kitten Kate after celebrity mother-daughter duo Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson. Their story went viral after it was posted on social media, and they were eventually adopted together by Joe Harris and his wife.

Goldie and Kate are now all grown up, and they love their lives in their forever home! Joe said that Kate still nuzzles up to Goldie at night, making it clear that she loves her mother very much!
