Xavier McCoury was your average fourth-grade boy, except one thing. He was completely colorblind and had never seen color at all. Xavier’s colorblindness is even more rare than most because he can only see shades of black, white, and grey, rather than just being blind to certain colors.
Colorblindness is a fairly common genetic condition, but Xavier’s family decided to try to do something really special for him for his 10th birthday. They bought him a unique pair of glasses, called Enchroma Glasses that have a unique set of lenses that correct colorblindness.
When it came time to open his special gift, the North Carolina family records the reaction Xavier has the moment he puts the glasses on. His aunt Selena explains what the glasses are and then his jaw drops the minute he puts them on.

Through tears, Xavier says that he didn’t realize what he was seeing is what most people see every day. His family asks him if he will ever take the glasses off to which he replied,” I don’t want to.”
Xavier took in all the shades around him and his mother, Melissa, says that there was not a dry eye in the group. His father even brought some of his son’s possessions so he could see what they looked like in color.

“There are so many beautiful Carolina sunsets and you just have to walk him through because he has no comprehension of what it is,” said Melissa. “The fact that he can see those now and all the beauty the world has to offer is just priceless.”
Check out the video below of when Xavier puts on the glasses and sees color for the first time. You might want to grab a tissue too. Be sure to share this amazing video with your family and friends.
