A disturbing piece of footage is going viral this week that is leaving people all over the globe completely horrified.

The video shows a Catholic priest slapping a crying baby across the face during a baptism at a church in France. The 43-second video begins with the priest cradling the baby’s face in his hands as the infant cries. At first, it seems like the priest is trying to comfort the baby, but then he starts slapping him in the face.

The priest slaps the baby multiple times before his stunned parents finally manage to wrestle the child out of his hands.

“I saw this video on Facebook, and I cried Loudly crying face was filled with anger and sadness. If  I was the mother of that baby, I wouldn’t hesitate to push or slapped the damn priest back!! I don’t care what he is!!” one social media user wrote.

“If that’s my son, I’d have hit the priest so hard that even God would prefer staying outta this,” another user added.

“This man calls himself a priest!! Sick, vile man,” a third user stated. “Slapping a baby what the hell is wrong with him he needs locking up.”

Though the priest has since been suspended from all religious duties until further notice, he still stands by his actions.

“The child was bawling and I needed to turn his head so I could pour the water. I was saying ‘be quiet’ but he wouldn’t calm down,” the priest said during an interview on Friday. “It was something between a caress and a little slap. I was trying to calm him down, I didn’t really know what to do.”
