When Officer Matthew Zarrella heard about a dog that was about to be put down in an animal shelter, he knew that he had to do something about it.

Matthew quickly noticed that the puppy was hyper and energetic, but thought there was something special about her, so he took a closer look. Years later, Matthew’s suspicions about the dog were confirmed in a surprising way.

Shelter worker Patricia Inman was devastated when she learned the puppy was about to be put down, so she called Rhode Island State Trooper Matthew Zarrella to ask him to adopt the canine, whose name is Ruby. Patricia never could have imagined the strange series of events that were about to unfold!

Matthew immediately fell in love with Ruby and recognized how smart she was, so he called fellow officer Daniel O’Neal, and made a proposition he couldn’t refuse. Daniel had been asking for a K-9 partner for years, so he was thrilled when Matthew told him he could train Ruby!

Four years after Ruby became his K-9 partner, Daniel took her out on a patrol in the woods to search for a missing teenager. Suddenly, Ruby veered off to the side, barking relentlessly at the officer as she pointed him towards a mysterious sight.

“We were a mile and a half into the woods when Ruby all of a sudden quickly darted,” Daniel recounted.

Daniel was shocked when he noticed the missing young man, severely injured and in need of critical care. He had no idea at the time that Ruby and this man shared a connection, and when he realized who the man was, his heart dropped.
