Thieves are not known for being the sharpest tools in the shed. If they had half a brain, they’d be earning an honest living somewhere rather than resorting to breaking the law to get through life.

Recently, a group of thieving thugs in New Mexico reminded the nation once again how dumb criminals can be when they stole a U-Haul trailer and then abandoned it when they realized what was inside.

Back in September, the punks stole this U-Haul from the parking lot of a Residence Inn Hotel in Albuquerque. The U-Haul was attached to a Chevy Trailblazer, which the thieves also stole. They sped off with the U-Haul without bothering to look inside it, so they had no idea that it was carrying some very special “cargo” that they were not prepared to deal with.

It was only after they made their escape that the thugs realized that the U-Haul was actually carrying the casket of the original driver’s dead father-in-law! The truck owner had been driving from Oklahoma to Arizona with his wife to give her father a proper burial when they stopped at the hotel for the night to rest.

Finding a body in the U-Haul spooked the thieves, so they abandoned both the U-Haul and the Trailblazer at a golf course before fleeing. The Albuquerque Police took to Twitter to say that the U-Haul had been recovered.

“Vehicle/trailer and human remains have been located by our Auto Theft Unit. Investigation continues. Thank you for your help,” the police said.

The three suspects were later apprehended and arrested, and officers say that the family was incredibly relieved to have the body of their loved one back.

“For the family absolutely, that’s our biggest relief. To bring closure that quickly is always a good thing,” said Officer Tanner Tixier.
